The maintenance shop at Montague Municipal sits behind the clubhouse where most golfers never have a reason to go.

Inside are half a dozen golf carts in various stages of disassembly. Bent axles lean against one wall. Windshields wait to be replaced. Somewhere beneath a workbench, an air compressor cycles on before falling silent again.

That’s where I found Frank Malloy. Most people around here simply know him as “the cart guy.”

What they don't know is that the quiet maintenance manager was once a Grand Sham Champion.

Malloy wound up here in 2011, two years after blowing four-shot lead in the Nasters Tournament.

“Made three nines in a row on Mayhem Corner,” said Malloy with a wry smile. “After that, everybody on tour just called me Twenty-Seven”

Malloy shrugged and went back to replacing the front axle on a golf cart that had somehow wound up in a retention pond.

Behind his workbench hung a battered putter in a glass display case. The putter was polished. The plaque beneath it had long since faded.

“That’s from the year I won the Fore!Skins Game," he replied when he saw me looking at it. "Back then I could still putt. But after the Twenty-Seven, I couldn't even pull the club back, let alone square the face. Started missing everything right”

No stretch of golf course has earned a darker reputation on the Grand Sham Tour than Westwood's 7th, 8th and 9th holes, known simply as Mayhem Corner. Since the 1988 Nasters, Tour players have hemorrhaged strokes there with astonishing regularity. Triple bogeys are common. Nearly every veteran of the Tour carries a Mayhem Corner story. Frank Malloy's is simply the one everyone remembers.

"People ask me what happened," Malloy said. "I tell them I played Mayhem Corner exactly the way it was designed."

Before I left, the radio crackled. Frank set down his wrench, took his leave and headed off to pull another cart out of a pond."

On my way out, I glanced once more at the old Fore!Skins putter hanging on the shop wall.

Around Montague Municipal, nobody knows Frank Malloy as a former Grand Sham Champion. They just know that if your golf cart breaks down—or winds up in the water—the cart guy will take care of it.
